For conspicuous gallantry on May 26th 1918, N.W. of FESTUBERT. He was in command of a Lewis-gun Section in a front line post. About 3.30am a party of the enemy succeeded in creeping along a ditch and through tall grass to within a few yards of the post and attempted to rush it, shouting "Hans Up". Although the enemy came fifteen to twenty strong, were practically on top of him and were firing revolvers and throwing bombs, he at once got his gun into action and opened fire. He quickly killed two of them, both N.C.O's and broke up the remainder who turned and ran, L/Cpl. Burdass firing at them till out of sight. His coolness under fire and prompt action in emergency certainly saved the post from suffering more casualties before the enemy were driven off (two of our men were wounded).
