For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 19th 1917, when the Battalion captured enemy trenches and FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS, C.S.M. Brown was with the left assaulting Company and in the final few minutes the Company Commander was wounded (the only other officer had only joined the Battalion two days before, and had never been in action: hence the responsibility fell largely on the shoulders of C.S.M. Brown). The Company suffered several casualties in the advance and was checked before it gained its objective. He at once organised a further attack, personally led it, and successfully carried it through. As soon as the position was taken, he at once set to work to organise the defence and consolidation, whereby several counter-attacks were repulsed. The behaviour of this Warrant Officer cannot be too highly commended. The success of the operations is largely due to his personal gallantry, resource, and untiring energy.
