242445 L/Cpl. Arthur Fredrick BROWN

(Recommended for Distinguished Conduct Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the following occasions:

1. On the night of the 24th/25th Sept 1918 when the Battalion was holding the line North of PONTRUET the enemy raided our trenches after a heavy barrage. He drove off the enemy in front of his post with his Lewis-gun and then pushed along the trench and took in enfilade a party of the enemy who had succeeded in entering the trench.

2. On the 17th October 1918 during the attack on ANDIGNY LES FERMES he got detached form his Company owing to the thick fog but pushed on with his Section collecting other parties on the way. In front of the village he displayed great courage in neutralising hostile machine-guns with his Lewis-gun thus assisting the advance and saving many casualties.

3. On the 8th November 1918 East of HAUT-LIEU when his Platoon was held up by heavy enemy machine-gun fire, he pushed forward to a flank alone with his Lewis-gun and brought fire to bear on the enemy. He has always shown a complete disregard for danger and sets a magnificent example to all.

Submitted 29/11/1918; Awarded M.M. 16/12/1918.
