240624 Pte. Fred BLAKEY

(Recommended for the Military Medal)

On the night of 04/05/1917 when the Battalion was in the front line near LOOS, Pte. Blakey was at a Lewis-gun post. A shell burst burying and whole team and killing or wounding all of them, except one man. Although much shaken Pte. Blakey and the one unwounded man got out their gun and remained at the post in spite of heavy shelling. It was only when the Battalion was relieved that it transpired that Pte. Blakey was wounded in the foot, a fact which he had concealed in order that he might remain at his post. He set a fine example to the other men.
