202420 Pte. James BELL

(Recommended for Military Medal)

For gallantry and determination in the face of the enemy whilst on a daylight patrol with an officer and another scout, N.E. of LOISNE on 06/08/1918. The patrol had penetrated to a distance of about 200 yards behind the enemy front line and found several dugouts, in one of which were six of the enemy asleep. A bomb was placed in their midst and the patrol withdrew. In doing so they were discovered and parties on the enemy began to advance against them from positions nearby. As the bomb had not exploded Pte. Bell immediately went back to the dugout and placed another there which exploded. Whilst returning to the dugout, and coming away, he was under fire, and his courage and determination resulted in casualties being inflicted in the enemy.
