On the night of the 20th August 1917 the ration train was only able to reach within 750 yards of Mansion House Dump VERMELLES, which is its destination, where rations are transferred to small tracks which are man handled. The metals being blown up in several places, rations had to be dumped in the open until the small tracks were fetched from Mansion House Dump. These could only be got to within 100 yards of the rations. The enemy then shelled heavily and the shells were dropping around the rations, which scattered the men in all directions. C.Q.M.S. Rushton, Cpl. Lawson, L/Cpl. Epton, Pte. Clarke and Pte. Beeby seeing that the rations were in danger of being blown up, stuck to their posts and moved the whole of the Battalions Rations to the small tracks into safety, the enemy shelling the whole time.
Entered as an act worthy to be placed on Record.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 29th September 1918 when the enemy positions east of BELLENGLISE were attacked. After the capture of the village of MAGNY LA FOSSE the enemy shelled our positions very heavily. This man who is a runner, although twice buried by shells, continued to carry out his duties and never failed to deliver his messages. His courage under fire is proverbial in the Battalion.
