241681 Pte. William Henry BATEMAN

(Recommended for Distinguished Conduct Medal)

This man was a member of a reconnoitring patrol which at 4.00am on the 23rd April 1917 set out to examine the enemy's position at CITE ST. ELIZABETH near LENS. When about fifty yards from our trench, the patrol was heavily fired upon and Pte. Waters was badly wounded, the rest of the patrol being forced to take cover in a house. Without hesitation Pte. Bateman ran out under heavy machine-gun and rifle fire at close range and although of smaller build than Pte. Waters carried the latter thirty yards to a place of safety.
