201495 Pte. Thomas ATKINS (Stamford)

(Recommended for Distinguished Conduct Medal)

For fine courage and initiative on the 17th October 1918, when the enemy positions south-east of VAUX ANDIGNY were attacked. During the attack on the village of ANDIGNY LES FERMES this man having located the position of an enemy machine-gun on the edge of the village, pushed forward alone, under heavy fire, with a Lewis-gun, all the rest of his section having become casualties, and kept up a continuous fire on the enemy gun, thereby neutralising it and saving many casualties. This man displayed courage and initiative of a high order. He was wounded in so doing but continued to serve his gun until the objective had been gained.
