240817 Pte. Reginald Frank ASHTON

(Recommended for Military Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 19th June 1917 when the Battalion captured enemy trenches near FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS. Pte. Ashton was in charge of a Lewis-gun team. He handled his gun with great skill and coolness and got into action at a very forward point on the left flank, thus enabling a further advance to be made, when heavy enemy fire was holding it up. His action was most valuable at a critical time when one of the Company guns had been put out of action, and the team of another broken up. On the same night, he was the first to observe the enemy massing for a counter attack and he at once opened fire from an exposed position and did considerable execution. In succeeding counter attacks he again handled his gun with great promptitude. Throughout he behaved in an admirable manner, continually exposing himself to heavy fire.
