240787 Sgt. George ARLISS

(Recommended for Military Medal)

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 19th June 1917 when the Battalion captured enemy trenches near FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS. This N.C.O. was in command of a Platoon wiring in front of the newly captured trenches, when the enemy opened rapid fire on them at close range. He showed great coolness and good leadership in the way he handled his men in a trying situation. One man was badly wounded and Sgt. Arliss went out under very heavy fire and brought him in. Throughout the whole action he set his men a fine example by his courage and cheerfulness.
