For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on June 19th 1917, when the Battalion captured enemy trenches near FOSSE 3 DE LIEVIN, S.W. of LENS. This N.C.O. was in command of a post on the extreme left of the newly captured position, in a different place that appeared very liable to be counter-attacked and was subjected to heavy fire. He showed very great coolness and courage in organising the post and holding it during three attempted counter attacks, although a large number of his men became casualties. He showed considerable ability in emergency and set a fine example.
